The UCHealth EMS prenatal vehicle safety program is the leader in roadway safety for pregnant and fetal vehicle occupants.
Each year there are 1,569 fetal fatalities on U.S. roads. That is 22 times greater than the number of annual infant fatalities. Simple proper seat belt use could reduce adverse fetal outcomes by 84%. Sadly, only one in four pregnant drivers use their seat belt and airbags correctly. UCHealth EMS has developed strategies to combat this problem and reduce maternal/fetal injuries.
There are educational materials in 16 languages, teaching tools for professionals, and a web resource with everything needed to improve pregnant driver safety. UCHealth EMS has also pioneered a prenatal seat belt check system similar to a car seat check. Prenatal seat belt checks have led to a drastic increase in proper use of both seat belts and airbags by pregnant drivers.
